Sustainability

Ensuring clothing lives a long life is one of the easiest ways to ensure a wardrobe is doing its bit for the planet. Repairs to garments are available at Dawson, whether it be patching a hole or tear, replacing zippers or hemming. At Dawson, a garment that has been patched, altered or let out is not a worn out garment. It is a well worn one.

Sustainable and ethical production are such important aspects of fashion and can easily be overlooked, resulting in fashion being among the most wasteful industries worldwide. Unfortunately this isn't only fast fashion, it can also include small brands who outsource production to factories. It is so important to shop with brands that offer full transparency, so you know who is actually making your clothes. Good On You is a wonderful resource for learning about a brand's sustainability and ethical considerations.

DESIGN

All Dawson pieces are thoughtfully designed to ensure versatility and practicality in the hopes these pieces become wardrobe staples to carry with you through life.

Garment patterns are drafted by Lily using minimal paper. As most waste is a direct result of mistakes, careful and considered pattern making is at the core of the Dawson process.

PAPER

Paper scraps from the design and pattern making processes are shredded and hydrated to create paper used for swing tags, ensuring zero paper waste.

All tags and labels were designed by Lily and either carved in house or hand made in the UK by Get Stamped, a local maker Lily worked with while living in Scotland.

FABRIC & MATERIALS

Almost 100% of materials are deadstock and locally sourced, including fabric, buttons, zippers and elastic, with the exception of thread. Dawson uses a trusted thread brand chosen for its strength and in turn, seam durability.

Pattern pieces are carefully arranged on fabric prior to cutting to ensure the most optimal use of materials is achieved. Offcuts are used to make garment and size labels, as well as remnant accessories.

PRODUCTION

With Lily as the sole person involved in the production process, every seam and garment is constructed to the high standard Dawson holds itself to.

Before any garment goes to sale, samples are tested for wear points and any areas of weakness or discomfort. Wearing samples for several weeks is the best way to assess this honestly. Samples are never wasted and find their way into the wardrobes of friends, family and Lily herself.
